Description

When you look up at the stars in the night sky it can be easy to think of them as lights glowing on a large dark ceiling. Can you identify the brightest stars and planets? Do you know which constellations are visible right now, and what their stories are? New Zealand's Night Skyby the Stardome Observatory and Planetarium guides you through our southern hemisphere night sky with two detailed star maps which glow in the dark, allowing you to view them outdoors at night. The guide also provides a detailed list of the constellations with useful images and descriptions.

Author description

Opening as an Observatory in March 1967, Stardome is considered one of the Auckland region's most popular and best loved attractions. Building its own Planetarium in 1997, it is the largest and most advanced planetarium in New Zealand, and one of few in the world co-located with a publicly accessible observatory. Stardome's mission is to inspire, challenge and educate about astronomy and space sciences. Stardome offers its visitors a unique experience combining learning with entertainment. David Britten is an Astronomy Educator at Stardome. He is regularly called on by the media to comment on celestial events, drawing on many years of experience explaining astronomical concepts in ways easily understood by the public.
